Engagement ring shapes

What the common silhouettes look like, without a popularity ranking.

Updated October 11, 2026

Draft for human review. This page is not published advice. Anything marked (to verify) is not confirmed. Operated by Nliminal, LLC.

Shapes are outlines. A photo compresses them. If a retailer offers a return or a resize, read the current policy before you rely on it. (to verify)

  • Round — a circle. Facets are cut to return light. "Round" is not a quality grade.
  • Oval — a stretched circle. It can face up longer than a round of the same carat weight. That is a proportion comment, not a price claim.
  • Emerald — a rectangular step cut with broad facets. Fingerprints show. That is a care note, not a defect score.
  • Pear — round on one end, pointed on the other. The point needs a setting that protects it. Ask the jeweler how the tip is covered.
  • Cushion — soft corners, a mix of round and square. "Cushion" covers more than one cutting style. Ask which one you are seeing.
  • Princess and marquise — princess is a square (or near-square) brilliant. Marquise is a narrow boat shape. Both have points or corners to protect. This draft does not rank them.

No shape is listed here as the most popular. We do not have a sourced ranking in this draft, so we are not publishing one.

Color in a product photo is not the color on a hand. If you are choosing between two shapes, look at both, then decide the metal. The buying guide covers that order.
