Holiday lights

Lights look best after dark, and in December the dark comes early. The sun calculator on this site, which uses the NOAA solar formulas [1], gives these times for Saturday, December 12, 2026.

That early sunset means you can ask at a normal evening hour and still be among the lights. PopTheQuestion Editorial wrote this page, and an AI tool may have helped prepare it. Every source is listed below with the date we read it.

Four ideas

  1. A neighborhood walk. Pick a street where residents decorate and walk it slowly. Ask at the end, away from the busiest corner.
  2. A town square or park display. If the place is a public lights display, check the hours on the organizer's own page the week you go, because hours and closures change.
  3. A drive with a thermos. Ask in the parked car with the engine off and the heater low, where it is warm and nobody is listening.
  4. Lights at home. String a few lights on a porch or a window and ask there. It is the simplest plan and the easiest to move if the weather turns.

Before you go

Dress for the coldest part of the night, and keep the ring in an inside pocket, not a coat you will take off. Bring gloves you can take off with one hand. Choose a second place that does not depend on weather or a crowd, such as a quiet café or your own front room, and decide in advance when you will switch to it. If you want a photo, ask a friend to stand at a distance rather than stopping a stranger.

The Christmas proposal plan has a dated countdown, and the proposal ideas hub lists more settings.
